Cream of the Crop, 1st Place Feature
KOREAN

Judges
The Journal Times, Racine, Wisconsin. Scott Anderson/Staff Photographer Mark Hertzberg/Director of Photography Gregory Shaver/Staff Photographer and Indiana native. We enjoyed judging the contest. We like the software a lot! We were surprised that there is no spot news category, or else that you have a general news one, and not overall news. News was a very strong category. Multiple was a very weak category.

Judges Comments:
This is a wonderful moment at a routine school assignment. It was a unanimous choice for first place.

F-Feature 2nd Place
Photographer: Aaron Pennock/ Tipton Argus

Judges Comments:
This is a fun, well-edited, and well-composed picture.

F-Feature 3rd Place
Photographer: Sam Riche, The Indianapolis Star

Judges Comments:
This photo shows that the photographer has a sense of humor, which is important. We can’t get Wisconsin squirrels to cooperate this well.

Judges Comments:
This is a fun photo that dropped to an HM because it needed a better crop… you could lose the people at the top, and give us a bit more on the bottom if there is more on the frame.

GN-General_News 1st Place
Photographer: Jon L. Hendricks/The Times
Image:GN_JLHM_08
Judges Comments:
This is a wonderful picture with a lot to look at, highlighted by the reactions of the people in the photo. There was debate for first because it happened in front of the camera, still, the photographer stuck with it, and had a photo for the readers which was certainly one they noticed and talked about. You never know what will happen at what you think is a ho-hum assignment.

GN-General_News 2nd Place
Photographer: Scott M. Bort

Judges Comments:
This was a close contender for first. The lighting is subtle and delicate, there is good texture. The photographer looked behind the scenes for a better photograph than the standard stage shot.

GN-General_News 3rd Place
Photographer: Heather Charles, The Indianapolis Star
Image:GN_HLCI_02
Judges Comments:
A forlorn traveler is shown in an unexpected shelter photo. The low camera angle and the clutter in the background are important to the success of the image.

GN-General_News HM Place
Photographer: Jon L. Hendricks/The Times

Judges Comments:
It was a close vote between this and a long shot of three people in the middle of a snow-covered street. The choice of lens and the framing in this photo are its strong points.

Multiple_Entry 1st Place
Photographer: Scott M. Bort
Image:Ma_SMBM_01
Judges Comments:
This was not only a strong story, but easily the best of a disappointingly weak category. The photographer told many aspects of the story.

Multiple_Entry 2nd Place
Photographer: Matt Detrich/The Indianapolis St
Image:Ma_MLDI_01
Judges Comments:
The photographer followed the news story from beginning to end. Nice ending shot of the empty hall, shot from the back, following the nice tight shot of the two befuddled school board members.

Multiple_Entry 3rd Place
Photographer: Garet Cobb / Bedford Times-Mail

Judges Comments:
The photo with the most potential was the photo of the jog back home in low light. It is the most memorable photo in the story.

S-Sports 1st Place
Photographer: Chris Howell, The Herald-Times
Image:S_CAHB03
Judges Comments:
“I love how messy the photo is! There are so many things happening in the shot,” said one of the judges.

S-Sports 2nd Place
Photographer: Scott M. Bort

Judges Comments:
The photo is well lit and is a wonderful example of looking for the story-telling photo beyond simply following the bouncing ball.

S-Sports HM Place
Photographer: Chris Howell, The Herald-Times

Judges Comments:
This was a close contender for third. The motion of the player starting to move in for the ball is what makes the photo.

S-Sports 3rd Place
Photographer: Rob Goebel/Indianapolis Star.

Judges Comments:
There is nice symmetry in the action.
