Judges Comments:
Overall the category seemed weak. There is more to a feature than kid photographs, although we know that’s a large part of community newspaper work. It’s not that we didn’t like them, but didn’t find them compelling or humorous. We chose first place because we like the moment and kept looking around the frame at the textures. It also stood out as a different moment than the rest. Second was a quiet moment and clean. We loved the kid on the swings, but wish it was cleaner.

GN-General_News 1st Place 50 Points

Judges Comments:
This category was more or less a process of elimination because there were so many features in the general news category. Those entering should take a look at the descriptions of the categories to avoid their entries getting eliminated for being in the wrong section. We liked first because of the photographers willingness to get close (even with a telephoto) and show us some raw emotion. We liked the overall of second, but wish there was more of a moment there. And third could have used a crop from the left, but again, showed us some emotion and news.

Multiple_Entry 1st Place 50 Points

Judges Comments:
Most of the multiple category was either too long or way too short. We liked first for the inside look of the team. It had some great moments and peak action, but would have benefited from a tighter edit. The storm chasing was interesting and had some nice light. Third was a tough choice, but we went with the cows because of the few strong images. Much like the basketball story, it could have been edited tighter.

Judges Comments:
There were a lot of similar moments and frames in the category which took us some time to sift through and pick the strong of the two or three. We loved first, it had it all – color, light, moment, composition, and a great face. Second was nice jube and the confetti added another layer of color and eye candy. Third could have used a crop from the right to focus on the two dejected players, but well executed.

We liked this as a honorable mention. Great moment, but technically off.
