We awarded the funniest photo a first place. Great timing and story-telling in an otherwise weak category.

Great use of light in an otherwise hard to read moment. Nice effort nonetheless.

To some judges this was a clear winner. Perfect use of light although the people at left provide little detail to the photo.

A lighter side to a serious topic. And you can never go wrong showing the wait staff.

Again tighter cropping makes this photo standout. Concentrate on the faces. A good moment from a tough assignment.

A wonderful portrait. Simple, elegant and wonderful use of light. Nothing else came close.

Judges Comments:
A huge disappointment in this category because there were only two entries. We know times are tough, but seriously. An easy win for any photographer with some story-telling images, even from one good assignment. The photographer demonstrated a range of imagery that was pleasant to the eye. The overall story-telling element was somewhat lacking, but a good job indeed.

Judges Comments:
It was a tough call in this category, but this entry, although good, could have used a tighter edit. Some of the photos seemed to be along for the ride, not adding enough detail to the story. A good effort, but a hard subject to cover and reveal something new and exciting.

Judges Comments:
Top choice among the judges, one even saying “this is perfect”. While the rest of us withheld such high praise it was still the clear winner in a category with lots of good action.

Wonderful image as we all know how hard it is to truly capture great action. Well done.

Judges Comments:
Best of the rest and close to being second place. Love the peak action. The background is a bit distracting, but that in no way detracted from the overall image. Well done.

Judges Comments:
The first place photo had the most story-telling elements and was a good use of composition for a news photo.

Judges Comments:
The second place winner had a funny element to a serious matter.

Judges Comments:
Some of the judges thought this photo could have benefited from a tighter crop. And we wondered with the water so shallow why the driver didn’t simply walk to safety.
