Midland Daily News, Midland, Michigan: Nick King, Neil Blake and Sean Proctor We enjoyed looking through images from our neighbor down south. Overall, we would have liked to have seen cleaner compositions, more thoughtful framing and a better awareness of the backgrounds. The first place photos rose above the rest because of their moments and style. The picture multiple category was the weakest overall, largely to due to loose edits and lack of storyline.

We liked this photo because of the unique moment and layered composition. It’s a surprising scene that goes beyond the typical “balloon photo.”

We appreciated the strength of the moment and access to the situation, however we would have liked to see a more thoughtful composition and attention to detail around the edges of the frame.

We liked the documentary moment and subject matter in this photo. The baby yawning is nice quirk. But, we did not feel that the composition and framing was strong enough to elevate it above the other two.

This photo illuminates a important story with a thoughtful and bold point of view. Even without a person’s face, it is still a strong storytelling moment.

This photo story stood out because it highlights nice moments from Gov. Elect Mike Pence’s day. We felt the story would have been greatly improved with a tighter edit. Many of the images are redundant.

In this story we liked many of the photographs individually, but we felt it was difficult to find a narrative or common theme from the events.

We thought this essay showed solid game coverage. There were many strong moments and peak action photos from the game. However, we felt that it did not hold together well as a story.

We enjoyed this unusual peak action moment from an important basketball game. It shows the athleticism and versatility of the athletes. However, the importance of using spell check during the caption writing process cannot be overstated. 🙂

This is a great capture from THE game of the season. It sums up the game in a single frame.

We liked the prospective that this was shot from and the fact that we could see the players’ faces. The moment was not strong enough to elevate it into the top three.
