Judges
Photos were judged by Flint Journal multimedia specialist Jake May and interns Zack Wittman, Central Michigan University, and Michelle Tessier, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As a whole, we would have hoped for more entries. The top selections were easy to make. We were a bit surprised at the lack of storytelling images, since we all pride Indiana as being a state that really makes a point of having those style of images. Some that placed did well to meet that, but the others dropped off quickly.

Judges Comments:
A clean frame with nice composition on a nice behind the scenes photo that captures the aura of pageantry and county fair royalty. Quirky.

Judges Comments:
Nice symmetry and good layering. It’s not something you see every day, and this makes us see the care for investing time into community storytelling.

Judges Comments:
Good capture, specifically with composition in setting a scene and having a moment in an environmental shot.

Judges Comments:
Nice use of lights and separation. This photo would have placed higher if there was more of a storytelling aspect or moment.

Judges Comments:
Something different, something tight. This made a regular annual event into something interesting visually.

Judges Comments:
Way to get wet! Seriously shows dedication to the craft, and the water fills the frame well, along with the mayor’s moment. Though, we wish all the faces of the passengers were visible, still a well-shot frame.

Judges Comments:
Compositionally, normally we see squares in frames. It intrigues us to see a photo based on circles. A solid moment with the kid, and good job framing him within all of the circles.

Just a solid view of daily life in Indiana for kids. Good layering and composition, and nice quiet moment. Well-toned as well.

Judges Comments:
Though we thought this story would be stronger with two less photos, it does the best job illustrating an interesting topic. Note: In all of the stories, not many photos struck us as a standout visual. Good, solid storytelling in a few, including this one, but nothing that “wowed” us.

Judges Comments:
The captions helped elevate this story to second place. Well shot, and a variety of images.

Judges Comments:
Visually-interesting, though we wish the miners would be identified in the captions.

Judges Comments:
Best sports action as a whole. Great separation and focus, and really makes us want to know the outcome of the slide. We were happy to see that information was in the caption as well.

Judges Comments:
This frame captures the intensity of the event while setting a scene in the environment around the race. The shadows and shapes formed through the cityscape allow us to get lost in the frame — in a good way.

Judges Comments:
Nice color. Bunker shot is well. The colors of the ball and her skirt pop, which make this better than the standard.
