The contest was judged by Scott Muthersbaugh, a staff photographer for the Times-News in Burlington, NC, and Jerry Wolford, a staff photographer for the News & Record in Greensboro, NC. We really enjoyed looking over your work and were impressed by your judging platform.

Judges Comments:
Clearly the first place image in the category. Nice composition the photographer was working the light and shadows of the environment instead of fighting it.

Photographer: DENNY SIMMONS

Judges Comments:
The best moment captured in the category. We love the body language captured. A storytelling image.

F-Feature 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: Matt Detrich/Indianapolis Star

Judges Comments:
This was the most visually structured of the category. The photo conveys the photographer’s tenacity for working the scene for a graphic image.

Judges Comments:
Strongest photo in the category. Cute picture. We appreciated that she was willing to give it one finger’s worth of touch but no more. A more dynamic crop on an angle could have added even more.

Judges Comments:
We thought this was the community newsiest photo of the bunch. Not our favorite compositionally, but we appreciated him being led off by his wife.

Gross but tells the story.

We thought this photo was an example of simple composition being effective.

Photographer: Matt Detrich/Indianapolis Star

Judges Comments:
We tried to hard not give this first place since it was a santa claus story, but it kept rising up over the more newsworthy stories. The quirkiness of the images overpowered the others.

Judges Comments:
The story grew on us the more we looked at it. We felt it needed a tighter edit though. This story shows the photographer’s commitment to documenting a story that does not offer up a stream of easy photos.

Judges Comments:
We appreciated the tight edit and the different compositions that are not the normal for so much of what we shoot.

Judges Comments:
If the first image of the story had also been in the feature category it would have been our first place image. This was a great collections of images, not really a story, but well done and with some nice moments.

Judges Comments:
Great photo! We love the depth and texture of this picture. A reminder that a portrait can be more than a face smiling at the camera.

Judges Comments:
Quirky, Makes us want to meet the subjects. The mark of a good portrait is a deeper interest in the subjects from the photo.

Judges Comments:
Nice framing with solid toning of an image.

Judges Comments:
An example of the how the best photos need not come from the pro and college games. We thought this photo had layers of action. The player is in the air, about to lose their helmet, and the nice framing the defenders give the running back.

We liked this behind the scenes view of sport. Not the strongest locker room photo we have ever scene but it was interesting and fun.

Judges Comments:
A stretch for spot news but it would have done well in general news as well. Impressive to see a protest while active and in uniform. Credit due for a very through caption as well.
