Judges
Judges: Tim Schoon and Bill Adams, University of Iowa photographers We thought the general news category was stronger than I would have expected. We had a difficult time determining our final choices in general news. While we liked our top three sports photos a great deal, there was a lot of pretty everyday, mundane action entered in sports. We found that the multiple picture entries that told a nice, tight story fared better than the general, overall it’s winter type of stories.

Beautiful framing. The expression on her face makes it clear exactly what she thinks of the weather. The fact that the snow is so beautifully obvious really makes the point about the weather.

This technically challenging photo was pulled off beautifully. The varying contrast in the ice crystals adds nice depth to the photo as does the composition with the crystals getting smaller towards the corner.

We love the earnest look on the young girl’s face, and the variety of emotions you see from the other kids in line. Nice clean composition from a very difficult, busy situation.

It’s difficult to shoot the gallery from down below, so this is a difficult thing to capture, yet it does it well. We also like the array of faces that are watching this unfold.

We like the perfect framing and great use of depth of field. Schools are notoriously difficult in which to shoot, so getting a clean story-telling image impressed us.

We love how this photo makes you stop and ask what is going on. We love the serene look on the “victim’s” face in what should be a scary situation.

Funerals are always difficult to shoot, but this photographer managed to get a nice collection of storytelling images that effectively told the story of this funeral. The first photo was especially strong, and did a nice job of introducing us to what the rest of the story would be. We questioned the inclusion of the final hearse photo. We thought the walking-the-casket-out photo after the service would have been just as good of an ender, since it is a much stronger photo.

We appreciated the tight edit. This is obviously a very difficult environment in which to shoot, yet the photographer got a nice, tight collection of images which clearly told the story of the rescue. We thought the picture of the victim and rescuer going through the ice was especially strong.

There was a nice variety of photos from this event that told the story of the event well and showed the photographer’s ability to make a variety of interesting pictures from the same event.

We love this bizarre, almost silly, situation. It’s a unique moment we’d not seen before, and it’s executed very well. It’s far removed from your everyday basketball action, and to us, that was a good thing.

We love the look on the Butler player’s face, and the celebrating St. John’s players only add to the depth and storytelling value of this photo.

We love how the quarterback is flying out of the chaos like Superman. Great framing, and we love the thin stripe of blue at the bottom of the frame, so we know he’s diving for a touchdown.

Nice and tight action photo. It’s often tough to see facial expressions of offense and defense at the same time.
