Judges Comments:
Very nice moment. We enjoyed this a lot. Good composition and use of the frame. Very sense of place and of the event which provide good information. It’s all there.

Good moment. The tutu is cute. Good framing with a sense of place and information. Might have been a higher place if the wide angle distortion wasn’t so strong.

Judges Comments:
Simple, quiet photo with a nice moment and gesture. The lines and formal-ness of the composition helps although the right side of the frame is a little tight.

We felt that there were several entries that might have been more successful if they had been entered in the “Feature” category. The winner is an excellent moment, with great emotion from a sensitive news story. The hand on her back adds even more to the image.

A different candle light vigil photo for many of us. Very good emotion. Nice moment. The hands converging on the central subject is very nice. Good journalism to get the uncle and his name at the event.

Judges Comments:
We really like the emotion and moment here but would have liked to have seen more of the people at the top of the frame and less of the casket. Those people might have added some depth to an otherwise flat image and perhaps some emotional depth, too.

Judges Comments:
Overall, this was a weak category and the three winners really stuck out. All the entries would have benefitted from tighter edits – including the winners. Less is more.
This story has a very good subject, solid coverage and a beginning, middle and end. We felt that there could have been more visual variety, a little more focus on the fact that they were women and an image or two that dealt with family, friends and/or the crowds (or lack thereof) that came to their games. Overall, a solid package.

Judges Comments:
Very solid coverage of a one-time event. Lots of angles, lots of different images. Very good storytelling of the event. Obviously the photographer worked hard that day. A couple of small things: There’s not the usual intense emotions that we often see at these events. Not necessarily crying and/or hugging but the emotions we see for the survivors and those who love them.

Judges Comments:
Solid coverage with some solid emotion. We understand that the photographer is usually “locked down” at these events but there were a couple of photographs that we felt were missing – details that might include the taped over badges, the riderless horse, and perhaps a better image of the memorial photo. We also felt there were some missed opportunities of the responders saluting and when the memorial service was over and the victim’s fellow officers were dispersing.

Judges Comments:
This was a strong category with several contenders for the recognized spots. The winner is a relatively unique moment – while they happen more than they used to, getting a good frame like this is difficult. The body language and expressions of the front-row crowd are great. The intensity of the ball player as she remains engaged in the action on the floor adds even more to the image. Nicely done.

Great action. Great expressions. Clean frame. It’s simple and to the point. The ball’s placement also happens to fall perfectly. It was very difficult to chose between this and first place.

GREAT expression. The flying hair and body language add to this image to make it a winner. Good seeing by the photographer.

Excellent moment. Good expression. Good body language. Motion in the face lowers the quality somewhat.

Judges Comments:
Another strong category with several contenders for the top spots. Just a really nice moment. The placement of the bat makes it pop out, the expressions of the folks in the stands and the body language really make this image the top choice. Small criticism – we think it would be stronger if the bottom were cropped up past the kid in red on the right. That brings your eye to the staring kid faster as well as some of the other crowd members. Nicely done!

Very good moment. Solid emotion. But, the thing that really attracted us was the intimate feeling and the sense of “being there” with these girls. We aren’t back, watching them. We are in the middle as part of the group.

Very good emotion and moment. Does the job well. It’s fun to look at all those expressions.

We liked this moment quite a bit. It is a little busy and perhaps cropping the helmet out on the left would strengthen it.
