Judges Comments:
Wonderful seeing; nice use of light and juxtaposition of fish in tank and silhouette. Eye-catching; different way to compose a “standard” situation.

Photographer: Caitlin O

Judges Comments:
Low camera angle is both distinctive and helps us to get to the man immediately; nice separation, good backdrop, texture, strong sense of place. Lighting works well, too.

F-Feature 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: Rachel Mummey
Image:F_RMMJ_05
Judges Comments:
Dynamic use of compositional devices – foreground /background, diagonal perspective; good body language and we learn about the subject even without seeing his face.

Judges Comments:
Great use of lens to get in tight but to still keep a sense of place and what’s going on (in the background.) Conveys emotion and helps us connect with the issue.

GN-General_News 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: Matt Detrich/Indianapolis Star

Judges Comments:
Photographer made a delightful photo in a situation that might have resulted in a “groan” boring image. The attention to the moment in spite of a scripted plaque presentation really elevates this to one where we get a sense of personality and spirit.

A perp walk but handled well – sense of contrast between detainee and officer adds to the interest.

Multiple_Entry 1st Place Cream of the Crop 55 Points
Photographer: Robert Franklin, South Bend Tribune
Image:ma_rtfs_01
Judges Comments:
Comprehensive coverage with many strong individual photos. The photographer had to be mobile to cover the many aspects – from the funeral service to the people on the street showing their support.

Multiple_Entry 2nd Place 40 Points
Photographer: Heather Rousseau,The Herald
Image:ma_hkrj_01
Judges Comments:
Strike! Nice set of pictures – incorporating telling details; perhaps a little redundant (with one family picture too many) but a nice arc to the story, especially the remarriage at the end.

Multiple_Entry 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: Heather Rousseau,The Herald

Judges Comments:
Photographer works hard to show relationships while also giving us a good sense of the activities of the joint-venture restaurant. Catching those moments of connection can be difficult, but we get a good sense of the family’s character.

One judge wishes it were in color to be able to more easily distinguish between the uniforms; outstanding expressions and tight composition – really get a strong sense of the physical nature of the sport.

Good moment – based on photographer’s understanding of situation – shows the sportsmanship of the youth, and the understandable disappointment of losing a big game; Nicely handled.

Photographer is positioned well to show faces – low angle cleans up the background but also incorporates additional visual information valuable to the telling of the story.

SF-Sports-Feature 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: Denny Simmons

Delightful “surprise” with the framing – depth of field is just enough to keep the tug of war participants from becoming “ectoplasm”.
