Judges Comments:
We saw this easily as first place with the fun, exuberance on the student’s faces. Nice moment.

Judges Comments:
We all know how these two felt after a night shopping at Kroger, like the living dead. Fun framing of a typical Indianapolis couple facing a difficult new life after crawling and clawing their way out of their dirt beds.

Judges Comments:
Good seeing in this NDGT photo. The photographer had to do some thinking and maneuvering to make this image.

Judges Comments:
The window light really makes this image. There is a strange connection/distance between the two subjects and that dichotomy makes the picture a little more compelling.

Judges Comments:
This is a great photograph and we’re assuming it’s not a multiple exposure. The photographer had to work hard in order to come up with a solid location and had to haul a long enough lens with them to make the image extraordinary.

Great emotion and a good job getting clear, concise information in the caption to let us know exactly why this image is so powerful.

Beautiful light during a quiet moment in a vigil.

Judges Comments:
Yes, we know drills and simulations are generally verboten in clip contests. But given the international nature of ebola, this is a good, strong image with some nice details thrown in.

Multiple_Entry 1st Place Cream of the Crop 55 Points

Judges Comments:
This entry was clearly the winner in the multiple category. There is great depth of intimacy and some surprising access like the photo showing the mother slouched over the toilet with the son at the sink. The story could’ve been pared down by a few shots to tighten it up, but the overall narrative was very poignant and well done.

Judges Comments:
Who knew watching corn grow could be this interesting? The life cycle from seed to growing to harvest to shipping to consumer might sound visually boring, initially anyway. But this was pulled off nicely with a nod toward the breadth of National Geographic story telling.

Judges Comments:
Unlike the first two places in this category, the zombie walk was just pure fun. The other stories took months to shoot and this only took an hour or … brains … brains … brains …

Even though the images themselves don’t always match up to the other winners, there are some nice quieter moments in this series of pictures and a commitment of time to get them.

Good lensing, with a good peak action moment made this photo. The running back’s expression adds a little extra detail to the aerial gymnastics.

The two heads and the ball all glued together elevate this snap above other soccer header photos.

It would’ve been better if we knew why the two young kids were there or what they were doing with the bigger kids. But this is a solid, well juxtaposed image. Nice balance, good framing.

Great emotion and a wonderful moment echoed in the second player at right. This is a classic case where a tighter crop would’ve hurt this photo.

Lovely image. Beautiful moment. This may have been helped with just a little more crop on the left hand side of the frame.

Judges Comments:
Great job with showing something we rarely see in tennis photos. The picture suffers greatly, though, from a bad crop. We’re not saying it has to be an extreme vertical, but a lot of the energy and strength of the image is lost with all of the dead space around it. At the very, very least, get rid of the backstop pad on the left and come in from the gate on the right.
