Judges Comments:
The body language of all four boys – and how some are unsure and some convey confidence draws the viewer in. The fact that the ties don’t really match their outfits, yet their two of the boys faces express they’ve got style draws me into this picture.

Judges Comments:
In what must have been a chaotic time during this Christmas Tree lot, this photograph is well composed, almost calm, if it weren’t for the subject’s body language. The layers and lighting make this photograph, and the subject is framed well.

Judges Comments:
Good face, good body language, good sense of place. Hard to do with limbo photographs.

Judges Comments:
This young girl’s face and body language make the photograph. It could be cropped a bit tighter, but the joy in her face draws in the reader.

Judges Comments:
A nice moment that doesn’t involve shopping carts and looking directly at things to buy. There is good interaction between the two subjects and good body language. It’s hard to get fresh photos year after year on annual events.

Judges Comments:
Good framing, good face – he’s chowing down and disgusted (that fruit cake looks like a sponge one uses to wash a car). Caption really added to the photo.

Judges Comments:
I’m wondering if this wouldn’t have worked better in features – but it’s a nice pop flash – and good job framing the photo so my eye goes right to the girl on her dad’s shoulders. The crop helps fill the busy frame so I know where to look.

Judges Comments:
The photo is more of the dad and son. Filling the frame is nice with the nurse, but maybe tighter on the boy so those pamphlets in the background aren’t so distracting. Plus, the heart of the photograph is the boy and the dad’s face.

Judges Comments:
Best overall traditional story. Good variety of photographs, which is hard to do since the subject’s point of view will always be constant. Details, overalls, good emotion.

Judges Comments:
Extremely well done, was hard not to make this first. Good use of lens choice, even when having to use the same background. Good information good photographs.

Judges Comments:
A loose edit hurt this one – a few photos felt the same. Good moments, but a tighter edit would have elevated this to the top.

Judges Comments:
This woman looks like she’s having fun and doesn’t care who is entertained. There is a great sense of place, and her body language conveys she is rocking out to some great accordion music.

Judges Comments:
Understanding there are a few cliche pieces in the portrait (the flag, the hat) but this man’s eyes and expression draw me in. It’s quiet, sad and proud at the same time.

Judges Comments:
His hands cutoff at a weird point on his wrist should bother me, but his eye and face are highlighted so well, and framed by the car.

Good colors, good lighting, and good interaction with the camera.

Judges Comments:
There are no faces, yet this is the moment where the ball is knocked away, it’s on the plain of the end zone, there are legs and hands all mixed together and the tufts of dirt being kicked up.

Judges Comments:
The flow of arms draws me to the major foul and the ball. The photo draws me from back and forth looking at the arms and faces. It’s a good crop – all the important elements are represented.

Good faces, good expressions, and it’s clear what happened.

Nice moment of framing the eyes right before the ball falls through the net.

Judges Comments:
The expressions on both players – even both having their thumbs up – and the separation of the ball – is a nice detail. Both players faces are visible and although the body language of each subject is different, it conveys the same thing.

Judges Comments:
Lots of different expressions going on here – very enjoyable. Nice to see the photographer got access to a locker room and got some good emotion out of it.

The ball on its end, the shoe, the visible sock, and the dejected Browns player – nice elements to show that the player scored no matter what. Good framing.

Judges Comments:
Nice quiet moment that shows tension. A good sports feature that is subtle and conveys a game you don’t want to watch, but have to.

One of many “pretty” pictures in Spot News. The smoke and the silhouette of the axe give create a picturesque photo of a situation that was quite serious.

Judges Comments:
It’s a weirdly peaceful and pictorial photograph. Caption does not help, although I know I’m not supposed to judge on the caption. It does take a moment to find all the zig zag yellow tape, but it’s a different way to photograph a scene.

Judges Comments:
A nice scene setter for spot news, which can get repetitive of crushed cars, burned out houses and people on stretchers.

Another pictorial Spot News photograph – with lots of detail. Good sense of destruction and loss.
