Cream of the Crop

Judges

There were some very nice images here despite very light category entries. We would have liked to seen the contest a bit more competitive however. Sadly not much of a contest, at least this month. Also, there were a bunch of sports action pictures in the sports feature category that couldn’t be considered for either. Papers downsizing? People too busy to enter because of that? Seems to be a national trend. Very nice to see a longer-term black and white documentary picture story. Judges: Jane Tyska, Laura A. Oda, D. Ross Cameron – The Oakland Tribune, Oakland, Calif.

Judges Comments:
Beautiful non-traditional image with nice light, layering and repetition of form. This one stood out from the rest of the more typical images.

Judges Comments:
Great moment and expression. Damn, it must be cold out there! We have a bit of concern over the hand of god burning on the left however…

Judges Comments:
Funny moment and look at that doggone expression. Would have preferred a cleaner background, but dog moments are fleeting

F-Feature HM Place 10 Points
Photographer: Robert Franklin, South Bend Tribune

Judges Comments:
Nice use of old school black and white, rule of thirds and shallow depth of field help this image pop into honorable mention.

Judges Comments:
Great fun moment, this one stood out in a category light on images.

Judges Comments:
Well-composed powerful moment with nice layering. Wow, what a heavy story. Wonder how this kid is doing after all of this?

Judges Comments:
Nice use of light, judges thought it could have been cropped a bit tighter from the top and right.

Judges Comments:
A different moment that all judges liked, but may not have been a winner in a larger field. Wonder what it looked like wide-angle from the side view mirror?

Judges Comments:
Very nice story which stood out far ahead of all the others and not just because it was in black and white. The photographer took time to follow the subject and there were some nice moments and variety of images. A vertical or two would have been nice…

Multiple_Entry 2nd Place 40 Points
Photographer: Denny Simmons

Judges Comments:
Some good expressions and variations of angles and distances made this entry a second. We like to see longer-term picture stories in this category, but the photographer made good use of a daily assignment.

Judges Comments:
Again, like the second-place entry, the photographer made good use of a daily assignment to turn around some nice images for a short story.

Judges Comments:
This story had potential, and would have placed higher, but we felt that a lot of the images were repetitive. Could have used some detail shots.

Judges Comments:
We’ve seen this before, but it stood out in a category that didn’t have that many strong entries. Could have cropped a bit tighter from the bottom.

Judges Comments:
Good peak moment of physical contact and nice clean background made this one second.

SA-Sports-Action 3rd Place 30 Points

Judges Comments:
We liked that the photographer thought this one out a bit with the overhead angle. Again, a little tighter on top and bottom of the picture would have made it a little stronger.

SF-Sports-Feature 1st Place 50 Points

Judges Comments:
Great jubo and dejection in the same frame with nice light, tight crop and clean background made this one a winner. Kind of a cool line leading from ref to losing player. Negative space on the upper right works.

Beautiful strong moment and nice body language showing team camaraderie.

SF-Sports-Feature 3rd Place 30 Points

Judges Comments:
This one takes third for a nice moment and the photographer’s initiative in following the team back to the locker room after the game.

Judges Comments:
Pretty good jube but definitely needed a tighter crop on the right. Even better would have been extreme wide/tight on the girls on the left with the other players in the background. Layering is a bit flat, would have liked to seen more 3D.
