This is a quiet image with a wonderful sense of light and community. The eye moves from friends to the groups conversing in the background to the glowing light from windows and doors.

Nice sense of place and time, evoking the season with a palpable sense of winter on the way. It reminded of Alfred Hitchcock’s movie The Birds.

Energetic color, fun expressions and well timed framing make this image shine. BUT we would have preferred see this entry in the Sports Feature category.

Judges Comments:
Moody rain and the isolated blanket of color against a dreary dirty background make us wonder what happened in this lonely place. Each bouquet of flowers reminds us of a life lost. This is our Cream of the Crop for January. Well done!

Judges Comments:
The fog echoes the man’s breath of the cold winter day. And the tilted cup speaks to the misery and boredom of homelessness. Great of the photographer to get a quote, humanizing the subject.

Eyebrow icicles and warm fabric colors interplay in this seasonal feature.

We really loved the bingo hands close-up (great angle/detail) and the twins in bed (nice sense of environment, soft lighting, gestures). The story could benefit from a tighter edit by removing repeated themes to let the best unique images shine.

Excellent interaction/aggression showing the ferocity of competition. Lack of faces contributes to tension/intensity. Gaping mouth in background nice too.
