Striking emotion, tonality and sharpness. It puts us in the moment.

Judges Comments:
This image grabbed us. We appreciated the playful juxtaposition of toddler fingers and deadly teeth — and the feeling that the photographer patiently waited for this moment to arrive.

Judges Comments:
This is a pleasing composition. The whimsical placement of clouds and hats make this a standout. The photographer made the best of tough light.

Photographer: DENNY SIMMONS / COURIER & PRESS

Judges Comments:
This is a strong A1-ready news photo. It demonstrates patience and initiative from the photographer and avoids the same ol same ol. The photog truly earned that Election Night pizza.

Judges Comments:
This is a nice tableau with a strong color palate. It feels like the photographer was respectful and didn’t give away the surprise. We wonder, through, if there is an alternate frames with a stronger reaction from the daughter.

Judges Comments:
We really liked the reaction and lighting and the moment, but would’ve preferred a tighter crop. The inclusion of the woman on the right detracts from the composition and content.

Multiple_Entry 1st Place Cream of the Crop 60 Points
Photographer: DENNY SIMMONS / COURIER & PRESS
Image:ma_dsle_001
Judges Comments:
Terrific, sophisticated, moving images. This story demonstrates genuine talent and dedication to the subject. We would have liked to see more information in the captions, however. The captions were probably appropriate for the story they accompanied, but were insufficient for this context. We we left wondering what the whole story was. But the images were superb.

Judges Comments:
Solid story idea. We were drawn into the portrait of the boy with the horses. We would’ve like to have seen more intimate family moments and more purposeful compositions.

Judges Comments:
This photo has a great angle, action, and is the perfect frame. The outcome is unclear, which lends lends to the mystery.

Judges Comments:
This rises to the level of fine art. It is packed with emotion, information, rawness, and is entirely unexpected. It made us look deeper and linger.

Photographer: Michael Caterina/SouthBendTribune

Judges Comments:
This captures the commitment of both players, even if (or especially because?) Central State is “flopping.” Nice frame. This woulds benefit from a tighter crop on the right.

Judges Comments:
Excellent shot. We wish this had been included in the sports feature category, where it would’ve been a strong contender for 1st Place.

Great action.

SF-Sports-Feature 1st Place 50 Points
Photographer: Michael Caterina/SouthBendTribune

Judges Comments:
This is refreshingly different and makes us want to look longer. It was a good decision to go wide rather than zoom in on the faces in mid-ground, which allowed us to drink in the pink and white palette. Nice eye.

Photographer: Jeremy Hogan

Judges Comments:
Nice moment. It’s hard to make a respectful image of players in the throes of a tough loss, but this accomplishes it well and adds a twist of compassion from the opposing coach. Too bad the TV newscaster photobombed it, right? Gah. TV guys. Anyway, nice shot.

This photo could work with or without the mascot, which is exactly what makes it so good.
