Judges:

Overall comments: We were pleasantly surprised by how strong the spot news category was. Glad some newspapers are still paying attention to covering breaking news. The multiple picture category was a little weaker, but the first place entry was a great example of strong community storytelling. We hope more photogs and more papers can support this sort of visual journalism.

Photographer: Kelly Lafferty, Kokomo Tribune

Judges Comments:
Best moment in a category that didn’t have many entries. The gym light was surprisingly soft and worked in the photog’s favor.

General_News 2nd Place 40 Points
Photographer: Michael Caterina, South Bend Tribune

Judges Comments:
This moment really captured residents’ sadness and frustration. It really sums up a major aspect of Buttigieg’s campaign in one frame.

General_News 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: Samantha Owens, Evansville Courier & Press

Judges Comments:
A different and unexpected news picture. Good color with the contrast between green and orange, as well as framing through the window, creates a mood of despair.

Multiple_Entry 1st Place Cream of the Crop 60 Points
Photographer: Denny Simmons, Courier & Press
Image:m_78-decker01
Judges Comments:
This was a thin category but this was by far the best photo story submitted. Not only is the photog seeing well – love the opening shot – we really get a sense of the subject’s personality and her relationships with others. Great work.

Multiple_Entry 2nd Place 40 Points
Photographer: Michael Caterina, South Bend Tribune
Image:m_63-golf_01
Judges Comments:
Decent variety of pictures, but starting with a prep work photo felt a little too literal – and the photo was not really that special. Also wish there was a wider overall/scene-setter to show the scope of the course, and maybe a detail shot or two.

Multiple_Entry 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: Denny Simmons, Courier & Press

Judges Comments:
Some nice moments and variety, but could have been edited a little tighter.

Well executed portrait that gives a sense of the subject’s pain as well as strength.

Portraits 2nd Place 40 Points
Photographer: Jenna Watson, Indianapolis Star

Judges Comments:
Good idea using the reflection to show the construction, but we wish the subject had not been smiling as much to better indicate her frustration with the situation.

Judges Comments:
A simple but well executed portrait. Love the old-timey look.

Great celebration with a relatively clean background – photog was smart to shoot this from a higher angle.

A quiet moment that benefits from the rainy environment to convey a sense of sadness yet solidarity.

Spot_News 1st Place 50 Points
Photographer: Michael Caterina, South Bend Tribune

Judges Comments:
Such a classic moment – love that the photog was able to capture this reunion, and the smoky background immediately tells the story without even having to read the caption.

Spot_News 2nd Place 40 Points
Photographer: Jeremy Hogan, Freelance

Judges Comments:
Really smart juxtaposition by the photog here – a clever picture that goes beyond what one might normally imagine “spot news” as.

Judges Comments:
The backlit water coupled with the firefighter’s face elevated this image above other firefighting pictures that were submitted.
