Photographer: Michael Caterina, South Bend Tribune
Image:f_63-rain
Judges Comments:
Graphically interesting with circles and squares. Subtle but unique. You can tell the photographer waited for the moment. The symmetry is the core element that makes it work.

Photographer: Michael Caterina, South Bend Tribune

Judges Comments:
This image stood out to all of us immediately. The photographer took a story that is hard to illustrate and executed it well. We like and appreciate that it has an eerie feeling to it.

An emotional moment tells the story. We could anticipate the story by just looking at the photo. There is a nice range of emotions across the frame.

This has a nice perspective that shows the scene and the mystery draws you in and makes you wonder what they’re searching for. Nice composition.

This photo sets the scene for the story. It gives the emotional gravity of the situation.

Multiple_Entry 1st Place Cream of the Crop 60 Points
Photographer: Samantha Owens, Evansville Courier & Press
Image:m_96-humanity_01
Judges Comments:
This is not only the best photo story in this category, but it’s also one of the best Habitat for Humanity photo stories we’ve ever seen. We admire the commitment of time spent on this story. The variety of views and compositions are really nice. The photographer really took their time and thought out their images and framed them well. This story is unique in the sense that we didn’t feel it needed a tighter edit, while most photo stories usually do.

Multiple_Entry 2nd Place 40 Points
Photographer: Jenna Watson, Indianapolis Star
Image:m_83-piper-climbs_01
Judges Comments:
This is a nice visual profile of Piper. It could have been more well-rounded if it showed a glimpse of her life outside of the gym.

Multiple_Entry 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: Denny Simmons, Courier & Press
Image:m_78-jimtown_001
Judges Comments:
This is a very ambitious story idea that, although well-executed, demanded much more time than it appears this photographer (or paper) may have had. It would be worth considering to continue and expand this project in the future.

Sports_Action 1st Place 50 Points
Photographer: Michael Caterina, South Bend Tribune
Image:sa_63-finish
Judges Comments:
Nice expression in the first place runner. The photo shows intensity and effort. It could use a tighter crop, especially at the top and the right of the frame.

Sports_Action 2nd Place 40 Points
Photographer: Joe Garza, Tribune-Star
Image:sa_80-incomplete
Judges Comments:
Nice action and moment. It needs a tighter crop; could definitely come in more on the right.

Sports_Action 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: Michael Caterina, South Bend Tribune
Image:sa_63-dirt
Judges Comments:
Pretty sports action image.

Sports_Feature 1st Place 50 Points
Photographer: Jeremy Hogan, Freelance
Image:sf_88-victory
Judges Comments:
This one grew on us over time. It’s a busy image but it has a lot of individual moments nested inside of it. This is a type of event where you’re not sure where to stand for the finish line photo and this was well executed.

Sports_Feature 2nd Place 40 Points
Photographer: Kale Wilk, The Times of Northwest Indiana

Judges Comments:
This is unique and fun.

Sports_Feature 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: Kale Wilk, The Times of Northwest Indiana

Judges Comments:
Strong reaction photo but would be better as a vertical crop.
