Winners

Feature HM Place 10 Points
Photographer: Marlena Sloss, The Herald
Image:f_100-prom
Judges Comments:
We love this image. The judges debated if this was a feature or general news. We feel features are more “found” situations.

Feature 1st Place 50 Points
Photographer: Samantha Owens, Evansville Courier & Press
Image:f_96-riverfrontyoga
Judges Comments:
Nice good looking for unique angle. The layering, and great light, wished it had a streak on her face.

Feature 2nd Place 40 Points
Photographer: Kelly Lafferty, Kokomo Tribune
Image:f_57-splash
Judges Comments:
We see a lot of splash pad images, but this one is well done, great expression and very clean composition.

Feature 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: Marlena Sloss, The Herald
Image:f_100-cownap
Judges Comments:
Another common image, but you can’t beat the sweet moment. A nice crop helped this elevate over a couple of close contenders.

General_News 1st Place 50 Points
Photographer: Jeremy Hogan, Freelance
Image:gn_88-enough
Judges Comments:
Expression always helps elevate an image and this one works.

General_News 2nd Place 40 Points
Photographer: Samantha Owens, Evansville Courier & Press
Image:gn_96-covidtesting
Judges Comments:
Nice job working the angle. Good reflection and timing to get the swab cleanly against the shadow in the car.

General_News 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: Jeremy Hogan, Freelance
Image:gn_88-execution
Judges Comments:
Good layers and the quiet moment.

Multiple_Entry 1st Place 50 Points
Photographer: Marlena Sloss, The Herald
Image:m_100-montgomerys_01
Judges Comments:
This story was quickly chosen as first. Nice to see more than just action pictures, but we still wanted more depth.

Multiple_Entry 2nd Place 40 Points
Photographer: Doug McSchooler, Freelance
Image:m_111-antimaskrally_01
Judges Comments:
A couple of the images helped this entry move up. Look for moments and tighter faces.

Multiple_Entry 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: Michael Caterina, South Bend Tribune
Image:m_63-graduation_01
Judges Comments:
There were a couple graduation stories, none of them were focused, but just a collection of images, this one showed a little depth, but still lacks moments.

Sports_Action 1st Place 50 Points
Photographer: Doug McSchooler, Freelance
Image:sa_111-catch
Judges Comments:
Great face! Tight crop, “tight is right”

Sports_Action 2nd Place 40 Points
Photographer: Kale Wilk, The Times of Northwest Indiana
Image:sa_99-01
Judges Comments:
Could have used a tighter crop. Good timing, wish one of the players had a better expression, but that is not the photographers fault.

Sports_Action 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: Michael Caterina, South Bend Tribune
Image:sa_63-fall
Judges Comments:
Funny Moment. Again, think about the crop, it would have helped see the fan reactions.

Sports_Feature 1st Place Cream of the Crop 60 Points
Photographer: Denny Simmons, Courier & Press
Image:sf_78-bluechip
Judges Comments:
Great light, very strong image.

Sports_Feature 2nd Place 40 Points
Photographer: Samantha Owens, Evansville Courier & Press
Image:sf_96-tballsmile
Judges Comments:
Great expression, nice bokeh. A slice of Americana.

Sports_Feature 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: Samantha Owens, Evansville Courier & Press
Image:sf_96-missedputt
Judges Comments:
Golf is filled with subtle moments, the golfer watching her putt come up short rose above the other entries.
