Apr 232013

Starting in the second quarter of 2013 (April and beyond), we will enact some changes the monthly clip contest.

First, we are axing the published requirement for clips. We had a discussion about this at the annual meeting back in February, and the general consensus was that this is an outdated rule that is hard for the clip chairman to enforce since physical clips are no longer accepted as entries. Also, it’s hard to track what “published” really means in the world of blogs, twitter, etc. today that news organizations use to disseminate photographs. Photos must be entered in the contest month they were taken, or first published.

Second, we will swap our illustrations category for a portrait category similar to that in the annual contest starting in April. The Portrait category will be quarterly. This won’t go into effect until after the first quarter of the year so we will be accepting illustrations for January-March to be judged as part of the March clip contest. We decided to do away with the illustrations category in the clip contest due to a small number of entrants in the past year taken together with the popularity of the portrait/personality category in the annual contest. The description of the portrait category will be: “a picture of a person that reveals the essence of the subject’s character.”

Third, we will require a minimum of four entrants in any given clip contest category before the category can be judged. For example, if we only have two different photographers enter multiples, the judges will not judge that category. This is a rule the annual contest has that we’re borrowing for the monthly contests.

Judges
Midland Daily News, Midland, Michigan: Nick King, Neil Blake and Sean Proctor We enjoyed looking through images from our neighbor down south. Overall, we would have liked to have seen cleaner compositions, more thoughtful framing and a better awareness of the backgrounds. The first place photos rose above the rest because of their moments and style. The picture multiple category was the weakest overall, largely to due to loose edits and lack of storyline.

Judges Comments:
We liked this photo because of the unique moment and layered composition. It’s a surprising scene that goes beyond the typical “balloon photo.”

Judges Comments:
We appreciated the strength of the moment and access to the situation, however we would have liked to see a more thoughtful composition and attention to detail around the edges of the frame.

We liked the documentary moment and subject matter in this photo. The baby yawning is nice quirk. But, we did not feel that the composition and framing was strong enough to elevate it above the other two.

This photo illuminates a important story with a thoughtful and bold point of view. Even without a person’s face, it is still a strong storytelling moment.

This photo story stood out because it highlights nice moments from Gov. Elect Mike Pence’s day. We felt the story would have been greatly improved with a tighter edit. Many of the images are redundant.

In this story we liked many of the photographs individually, but we felt it was difficult to find a narrative or common theme from the events.

We thought this essay showed solid game coverage. There were many strong moments and peak action photos from the game. However, we felt that it did not hold together well as a story.

The quality of a few wonderful, memorable pictures in this package elevates it above the other winners. Especially the counter seats and the nurses faces. Damn ref. Such a nice capture brought down by an intruding leg. Happens to all of us. Way to follow the action and get the moment.

Hello one and all,

It is time to start thinking about entering the 2012 INPA POY contest(s).

For those of you who do not like to read here is the short version of what you need to know:

Deadlines & Rules, with entry form/link at end:

PLACE: Contest Judging will be in Bloomington on the Campus of Indiana University (thank them for their generous financial support).
POY and MultiMedia finalists will be judged on Saturday, Feb. 23rd.
CPOY Judging, student portfolio reviews and Judges presentations will be on Friday, Feb. 22nd.

Your yearly dues must be paid in advance of 2/22 or your entries will be removed from the judging.

OK, now for the details,

As I am sure you all know it has become increasingly difficult to find sponsors willing to donate cash or merchandise. So there is a good chance we will not have major prizes (like cameras) as we have had in the past. The anemic attendance makes it difficult to ask sponsors to attend the event and the increasingly smaller size of our group makes it difficult for them to cost justify providing prizes.

I also need to point out that I do not check entries over before the deadline(s). Entries that do not substantially conform to the rules will be eliminated. We all work in a profession where accuracy and adhering to deadlines are key parts of the job, so it should be no problem to bring that same effort to your entry preparation.

CPOY Note: We have added 3 singles categories (News, Feature and Sports) in addition to the portfolio category as a trial this year. They will not impact the CPOY winner, which will still be selected by portfolio.

Rule Changes

There are no rules changes for the 2012 contest. It remains the same as 2011.

These were points of emphasis for the last couple of years, and I would like to point them out again this year.

Community Awareness
This category has averaged 4.0 entries per year over the last 4 years. For a category that has had a camera as a prize for the winner.
Something needed to change, so in order to encourage more people to enter, and for it to be a less daunting category, we have decreased the maximum number of images from 40 to 15.
You can enter stories or singles, but the total image count can not be greater then 15. Each photo in a story counts in the 15 image total. Title slides for stories do not count.

This category will be under review, and if we do not get entries up, it may be eliminated in the future.

The John Ahlhauser Award
Point of emphasis
No changes in the Ahlhauser rules, but I would like to remind entrants of a few key items from the category description;

  • This quotation expresses the underlying theme of the Ahlhauser Award: “. . . Barney (Cowherd) told me what a photographer is a man with a camera who loves people and tries to make them feel for one another.” –Bill Strode, from Preface to BARNEY COWHERD, PHOTOGRAPHER, copyright 1973 by The Louisville Courier-Journal and Times.
  • This category encourages in-depth and long-term projects, which help us to better understand each other and ourselves.
  • An entry may consist of one photograph or many related photographs taken in one year or over a number of years. (This is not a video category)

I would like to ask everyone to consider if their entry meets the definition of the category as outlined.
Ask yourself these questions:

  • Is my entry a long term project, or a group of related images (eligible), or is it an unrelated group of images(not eligible)?
  • Is this work in-depth, and does it have a cohesive theme running through it? What is that theme?

Enter early, but not often, best of luck.

AJ
