Judges Comments:
This was a gamble that paid off. It clearly took patience and planning, and resonates with local readers in a way that standard airport photos do not.

Judges Comments:
A sweet moment from what sounds like a passive situation. The composition and use of color draw your eye to the girl, and the framing of the legs and skirts is just perfect.

This is a different perspective than we usually see from fairs. Strong use of color and lines for an interesting, graphic image.

For a routine business assignment, there’s great variety, emotion and sense of place in this edit. There really aren’t any redundant photos.

There are a couple solid photos here with good emotion and light. This first photo really stands alone.

Judges Comments:
We hesitated to award a package of the President, because it’s very commonplace in our own area. But this edit has good variety and sense of place, including a solid behind-the-scenes photo.

Judges Comments:
One of the few true portraits in the submissions. The photographer really captured the personality of the subject, even if we disregard the political hat.

Judges Comments:
This has a lot going for it but the composition could be stronger. Good use of color – especially the green visor contrasting with the red shirt – and we’re intrigued to know more about him.

Judges Comments:
Diving is not an easy sport to shoot, but the photographer captured the action and intense face with great composition. Even the background contributes to the completeness of the image.

It takes a second to realize what’s happening. Great moment and the light hitting the hand and ball helps.

This may be a common sight to Indiana photographers, but to our eyes this is such an interesting track photo. The spacing of runners, direction of light and framing are all great.

Judges Comments:
The light and moment are wonderful; there’s a sense of place and complexity to the composition. We liked seeing a less-traditional feature in the sports action category.

Judges Comments:
The anonymity helps the players take on the essence of every losing team. The symmetry is captivating.

SF-Sports-Feature 2nd Place 40 Points

Judges Comments:
This is a quietly humorous photo. The identical pose, the way they contrast with the background and the well-considered space to the left all made this image stand out.

Judges Comments:
This is beautifully composed. It captures the pageantry around sports at every level, in a moment most photographers might not be continuing to work the scene.

Judges Comments:
The ground-level angle really works, and you can feel the intensity of the players. The light at top was just a bit too distracting to place this higher.

SN-Spot_News 1st Place Cream of the Crop 60 Points

Judges Comments:
A nontraditional spot news photo, this is composed perfectly to capture the peril the raccoon finds himself in.

Maybe it’s because it’s been a long, tough month, but this photo made us laugh every time we pulled it up and it stands above every other excellent entry.

An odd moment from regular spring weather news. The scale – giant tree roots and small child – makes this a surreal scene.
